Evidence of Work:
For this project we were asked to reverse engineer an object to get us thinking about our future capstone project. We each chose our own object but came together in groups to talk about the similarities and differences. I chose to break apart an old spice grinder. After we broke our objects apart, we drew conceptional and exploded view sketches. Before this project, we learned about what makes a good conceptual and exploded view sketch through drawing how a bicycle works. Then, we researched its components and how everything worked together. Each of us put our findings on a slide show and we presented for the class. Listening to other peoples presentations helped us with some pointers for next time. One example of this would be to add more research and dig into the scientific aspect of the object.

Content:
Reverse Engineering - a process where you take an object apart and research the different components. It is the opposite of engineering because you normally start by researching parts to create a whole object. All four of us did this for our project to get a feel for what it is like.
Conceptual Sketch - A rough sketch that describes an object and how all the parts move together. This includes labels and drawings that help the viewer visualize the real product. We drew a conceptual sketch of our object from different angles when it was put together.
Exploded View Sketch - all the parts of an object sketched like it was stopped in the middle of an explosion. Each side of the object is spread out to show every piece and how they all fit together.
6 Basic Types of Machines - In all machines there are 6 basic types of simple machines. They are the incline plane, lever, wedge, wheel and axle, pulley and screw. In our project we noticed that our objects have a few basic machines in common.
Reflection:
This project was interesting and got me thinking about the different parts of our capstone project. It helped me think about objects in different ways while learning to sketch them as well. I feel like while I was doing this project I kept myself caught up with the different steps. When the research was due, I made sure to start it right when we were assigned it so I could space out my time so it would be less overwhelming. I also made sure to include all of the requirements that were needed to fully understand the object. I did a lot of research on the specific spice grinder to make sure all the information I had was truthful and accurate. Two things I need to improve on for next time is taking more time to make the presentation look better and stay on task all the time. After watching all the other presentations and getting feedback from the other teams, I realized I needed to spend more time on the sketching and presentation aspect because it is just as important as the actual information. For example, we were told our slides had too many words and made it look crowded and harder to follow. Another thing I need to improve on is staying on task the whole time I am working on any project. At home it can be harder to dismiss distractions and get all the work done in a timely matter. While sketching or researching I would take many breaks making the whole process time consuming. For our capstone project I will work on the style and presentation of the work along with eliminating distractions to get all I need done.
